Daniel J. Gerstle
Daniel J. Gerstle has built a dual career in humanitarian response and multimedia storytelling. Starting out with the International Rescue Committee, he specialized in emergency health and nutrition, serving People in Need, International Medical Corps, and other aid agencies. After witnessing mass violence in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Gerstle shifted his career, writing for magazines and directing documentary films on how civilians struggled to survive and advocate for peace. Over the past fifteen years, Daniel has run Humanitarian Bazaar, which produces creative projects focused on how civilians survive, combining these themes with documentary films, peace festivals, and research on improving civilian protection. Gerstle has written freelance features for The Guardian, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, New America Media, Vocativ, and the Journal of International Affairs, among others.
Through this fellowship, Gerstle hopes to report on the innovations of emergency medical care in conflict zones and humanitarian situations.
