Juan Torres

Program Consultant

I walk out of my room and the first thing I see is my dad seated at the breakfast table reading the newspaper – I sit with him and start talking about the news. This is how I grew up, and probably the main reason why I chose to be a journalist. After years of working in newsrooms and managing a substantial number of journalism projects, what brings me to ICFJ is the chance to help tailor learning opportunities for other journalists in different parts of the world, while I learn about the amazing work these professionals develop in their countries.

At ICFJ I help manage the Disarming Disinformation program, a global program aimed to support journalists in the battle against disinformation.

My background: Before working at ICFJ, I worked as a data journalist, editor, innovation and digital media strategist in several newsrooms in Brazil, where I trained over 1,000 colleagues in data journalism skills. I also sat on the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalists board for six years, and had several journalism and media projects recognized with more than 15 regional and global awards. Besides journalism, I also have a degree in business administration.

Ask me about: Brazil, Uruguay, swimming, airplanes and ice cream. If you are not into any of those, reach out about data journalism.
