Karina Barraza
Karina Barraza is a well-known television and radio reporter in Hermosillo, Sonora. Despite her extensive experience as a journalist and being passionate about storytelling, Karina had never written an in-depth investigative story in narrative form. After hearing about the Border Center’s training program and also reading several stories published, Karina signed up for the six-week investigative journalism course. The reporter then applied for the fellowship program, perusing a story about the state’s response to forced disappearances. Karina developed a hypothesis and began using Mexico’s transparency laws to request public information, something she had not done before. In addition, her mentor assisted organizing the information in an Excel “master file” that helped the reporter to clearly identify the administrative problems identifying the bodies of disappeared persons. According to Karina, the Border Hub training and mentorship prepared her in “comprehensive security strategies, analyzing data, and soliciting public information.” Karina added that she is thankful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing professionally.
