Oscar Martinez

Program Assistant

I grew up with the foundation of always wanting to help others. This inspired me to work in a nonprofit, where I could use my skills to help people whenever possible. I was born and raised in El Salvador, where I saw corrupt governance, and where attacks on the press are commonplace. This, combined with the aspirations of spreading accurate information and democracy, tackling corruption, and educating others on important topics, is what inspired me to start my nonprofit career at ICFJ. As a program assistant, I provide support to various ICFJ’s global programs in North Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

My background: Before joining ICFJ, I was an operations manager in the hospitality industry for four years. I also served as a research assistant at the University of Mary Washington. My research included African American representation in state legislatures and tracking bills related to voting rights, abortion and gun laws at the 2020 Virginia General Assembly. I’m a native Spanish speaker, which has enabled me to connect and expand my knowledge with different people and cultures.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in Latin America studies at the University of Mary Washington.

Ask me about: Books, music, time travel, Latin America politics, and voting rights.
