Perla Resendez
Perla Resendez is a seasoned journalist used to covering the daily news with a special focus on security issues in Tamaulipas. Despite decades of experience, Perla had never conducted an in-depth investigative report because she thought it would be too overwhelming. After taking two data-journalism courses and reading several Border Hub investigations that her colleagues had published, she applied for the fellowship program. As Perla began to investigate how a former mayor of Matamoros used public resources, she ran into the challenge that no public officials wanted to be interviewed or quoted in the report. Daniela Guazo, the Border Hub mentor assigned to her fellowship project, helped her refocus the story so that it could be published with the information she had obtained thus far. In addition, Perla stated that the support of the Border Hub team was fundamental because they assisted her in every step of her first investigative report. Perla will also likely work on a follow-up story with the Border Center.
