Winners of Global Fact-Checking Contest Help Truth Outpace Falsehoods

Caricatures of politicians, time-lapse videos and an app modeled on a classic video game were among the winners of TruthBuzz, the Viral Fact-Checking Challenge.

Organized by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) with support from the Craig Newmark Foundation, the TruthBuzz contest aimed to find new ways to help verified facts reach the widest possible audience.

Journalists from Six Countries Honored for Outstanding Health Reporting

Journalists whose work brought to light inadequate and life-threatening medical care for mothers and newborns in Brazil, Ghana and India are among the winners of the 2017 Global Health Reporting Contest. Other winners reported on childhood cancer in China, a scourge of hepatitis C in Russia, and new medical centers for poor citizens in rural Benin.

A distinguished panel of judges selected the six winners from more than 130 submissions. The program is sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.

Two West Coast Leaders in Digital News Join ICFJ's Board of Directors

WASHINGTON – Craig Forman, president and chief executive officer of McClatchy Co., and Anne Kornblut, director of strategic communications and policy communications at Facebook, have joined the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Board of Directors.

Forman and Kornblut bring to the board a wealth of experience leading change at the intersection of journalism and technology.

A journalist and entrepreneur, Forman served as a media, technology and telecommunications executive immediately before joining McClatchy as CEO this year.

Journalists from Pakistan and Syria whose work exposed extremism and inhumanity in their countries are winners of the 2017 Knight International Journalism Award, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) announced.

The International Center for Journalists will honor Chris Wallace, the Fox News anchor, and Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, the National Public Radio correspondent, at its Awards Dinner on Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C.

Wallace, anchor of "Fox News Sunday," is known for bringing a tough, but fair, interviewing style to his coverage of major news events, including a 2016 presidential debate.

Wall Street Journal Deputy Managing Editor Joins ICFJ Board of Directors

Christine Glancey, deputy managing editor for news operations and talent at The Wall Street Journal, has joined the ICFJ Board of Directors.

Glancey brings to the board her deep knowledge of the news industry and newsroom training gained from nearly thirty years at The Journal. In her current role, which she took on in 2015, she is responsible for the global newsroom budget, operations, talent management and training.

“We’re thrilled to have Christine Glancey join the ICFJ Board,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan.

Google News Lab to Expand Reach of First Global Survey of Newsroom Tech

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 5, 2016 – With new support from Google News Lab, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will expand its groundbreaking global survey on the adoption of newsroom technologies from seven to 12 languages.

The upcoming survey, the State of Technology in Global Newsrooms, will shed much-needed light on how news media professionals use digital innovations for reporting, storytelling and distribution in newsrooms around the world.

Digital Wars: Quality Journalism Faces Off With the Forces of Deception

ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan spoke at the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA)'s Annual Assembly in Mexico City on the topic of "The Press, Digital Revolution and Democracy." Her remarks:

"I once heard that it takes 40 years to understand the full impact of a new technology. If that’s the case, then we are still in the middle of a digital revolution that is disrupting every industry from retail to banking and the media. It also takes time to understand the negative impact of that technology.
