Fighting Health Misinformation Requires A Strong Dose of Journalism

Yet worldwide we see a growing problem of health misinformation, spreading fast online and promoting fear. The consequences are often dire. That’s why I am building a network of collaborators across Latin America and launching Salud con Lupa, a digital, collaborative journalism platform dedicated to compelling, investigative coverage of public health.

ICFJ Alumni Receive Storytelling Grants to Engage Audiences in Real Time

Journalists from Nigeria and the U.S. will receive special grants to involve audiences in real-time news-gathering and storytelling of important news events. Two Nigerian reporters will explore the devastating aftermath of major oil spills, while a U.S. journalist, commentator and author will show pivotal changes in Beijing over the past 20 years through a personal travelogue.

Kenyan Journalist Wins 2019 Michael Elliott Award for Coverage of Fight Against Female Genital Mutilation

Dorcas Wangira, who reported on the harm caused by female genital mutilation and the hope offered by five tech-savvy teenage girls, has been named the 2019 winner of the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling. A distinguished panel of judges selected the Kenyan journalist from among 218 applicants for this prize.

Killing Pavel: Journalists showed "incredible tenacity and courage" in a film on the murder of a journalist in Ukraine.

The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its Ukrainian partner, Slidstvo.Info, have won this year’s Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Medal for their work on the investigative documentary “Killing Pavel” on the unsolved murder of a Belarussian reporter.

What Today's Newsrooms Can do to Spark Innovation For Tomorrow

Back in September, I partnered with The Express Tribune, a leading English-language newspaper in Karachi, Pakistan, as part of my ICFJ Knight Fellowship to work on news innovation. The main focus was working with the Tribune Labs team and helping them build up their capacity in order to work on visual and interactive content on their own, without the need for a developer.

To start off, we brought a developer on board as an Innovation Fellow. Our first task was to help Labs with a system where they could develop interactive features on their own and in the shortest possible time.
