Journalists Launch Innovative Projects to Counter Electoral Disinformation in Brazil

Teams of journalists in Brazil are rolling out new tools and resources to help voters spot disinformation and make more informed choices as the 2022 election cycle kicks off this month. The innovative projects - developed as part of the Jogo Limpo (“Fair Game”) initiative - include everything from a video fact-checking bot and an influencer campaign to gamification techniques for reaching youth.

These 6 Newsrooms are Creating Innovative Ways to Combat Misinformation in Brazil

The rise of mis- and disinformation is a major problem for democracies around the world. So-called “fake news”, spread on social media and texting services such as WhatsApp and Telegram, can undercut faith in elections and the democratic process and endanger peaceful transfers of power. In Brazil, the spread of disinformation will present a substantial risk to public faith in the outcome of this year’s presidential election, with false allegations of voter fraud, for instance, already running rampant.

Fact-checkers and journalists in Brazil committed to fighting mis- and disinformation ahead of the country’s upcoming elections will receive additional support through an initiative announced today called “Jogo Limpo,” or “Fair Game.” The program, run by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and supported by YouTube Brazil, will provide funding and mentorship for innovative projects that bolster the democratic process.
