In Panama, recent protests against certain government-awarded contracts have highlighted the need for insight and oversight into government spending and economic decisions. Journalists play a crucial role in highlighting wrongdoings and providing accessible, compelling information that will empower their communities to push for change and accountability.
Panamanian journalists are often overwhelmed with daily coverage, and some lack adequate resources to cover critical issues from a data-driven investigative lens. ICFJ aims to expand their capacity for data-driven investigative journalism and help equip Panama’s independent media, journalists and civil society representatives with more resources and skills.
About the program section:
ICFJ, with support from the US Embassy in Panama, will collaborate with our network of Panamanian investigative journalists, media educators and partners to implement an 18-month initiative that will aim to improve and increase coverage of government spending and governance by training journalists on data and investigative journalism. ICFJ will employ our tested “funnel approach” to programming, which starts with scale and width by engaging a large number of journalists, and then emphasizes depth via targeted and competitive training.
The program will have the following activities:
- Activity A. Opening webinars
- Activity B Training workshops
- Activity C. Story production, project grants and mentorship
