The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) completed the third phase of its four-part ECA program: bringing 14 fellows from the Middle East and North Africa (the NEA region) to the U.S. for a four-week program in October and November 2014.
This included an orientation at ICFJ's headquarters in Washington D.C., a three-week internship at a U.S. digital communication organizations. The 14 fellows completed their attachments at 13 host institutions in 9 states and the District of Columbia from October 13 to 31.
The attachments were designed to expose the fellows to practices at media institutions with strong digital products, from traditional media that have adapted successfully to the digital age, to new startups that are reinventing media. Reflecting the learning objectives of the program, ICFJ asked the host to ensure, after being introduced to the institution’s core business activity, that the fellow spent some time with a team or department focused on digital media, some time with a team or department focused on revenue strategy, and some time being directly mentored about the fellow’s digital media business concept. The group finally joined other Professional Fellows at the State Department's Professional Fellows Congress.
